Would rational actors have so many nuclear missiles to begin with?
Can a super ideological and very religious nation be described as a rational actor? It seems like in the US people embrace the irrational more than most other places.
What about Russia? You have an illiberal autocratic state with secret police, no individual rights, no political opposition is permitted in faux elections. They are running out of money, becoming more and more belligerent, and as they become more desperate they are clinging to jingoism and fascist values. Are they a rational actor?
Iran is just trying to produce electricity to have it on 24 hours a day. Iraq hasn't had electricity throughout the country since Saddam was in power  They would like to buy some. Trade would good for both of them, and would curb extremism.
I bet you are like most complacent and detached Americans (me included lol) who rarely lose power and when you do you get pissed off about it if it is off for more than 40 minutes.
But I would say that very few states can be described as rational.
We need to leave Iran alone and stop being resentful about them controlling their own system. That is what is irrational. It is like a war on autonomy, which is one of the principles of Democracy to begin with.
On the flip side the last thing we need is another nuclear melt down. No offense to the Iranian people, but if Japan can fuck up nuclear power (the world hasn't been the same since Fukishima), so can Iran. I'm not saying cut Iran out of the equation, but as a world we should be moving away from nuclear technology. We should be heavily subsidizing green technology (solar would fit Iraq well, amirite?) and supporting nations that move toward green energy.
