The tax only applies to certain added sweeteners so I'm pretty sure that's an error of the vendor. on both the juice.

Crazy.

Apparently the big bottles of syrup they sell to put in soda fountains(The drink dispensers at fast food restaurants etc) also are hit by the new tax.
$57.60 Tax on a $60 bottle!

What I found:

Code
Taxed
Fruit juices, punches and lemonade that are less than 50 percent fruit and/ or vegetable juice. That includes popular drinks like: (long list)

The juice above does say 100%, but im wondering if there is an additive that makes the tax apply.

The propel zero is also taxed because it has artificial sweetener, even tho it has no sugar.

I checked the ingredients on their site and it didn't have anything that should make it included in the tax, as far as I can tell.

ETA: Wait, never mind, I misread that the Reason article was talking about retailers and not the actual restaurants.

Retailers are definitely doing what they have to do, while restaurants are doing their best to maintain a huge profit margin while hiding behind the government and pretending they don't have any choice but to keep having the same huge margins on their drinks. It definitely makes sense and it's not like I wouldn't want to do the same thing if I were a restaurateur in the area, but the mayor is more or less correct that they're just choosing to hike the shit out of the price instead of eating into their margins.

The accusation was leveled at retailers, not that theres anything wrong with bars and restaurants making significant profit on serving drinks.

Businesses not eating the tax themselves was entirely foreseeable and does not constitute "gouging".
They're literally increasing prices the same amount as the tax.
Its now part of the cost of doing business and they still need to profit.
