If you ask me, most of the GOP wanted Trump to lose and shit the bed on purpose.
Why else would they pass such stupid laws before an election?
The election went almost ideal from the point of view of the (old) party establishment: Trump exceeds expectations, his coattails save the Senate and put the GOP in position to take back the House, but he himself still loses by a sufficiently clear margin.
If he had quietly faded into the background, they could have co-opted his policies and presented them with a less polarizing and erratic messenger. And without Trump's antics, they would presumably have won at least one of the Georgia runoffs, rendering Biden a lame duck since inauguration day.
Sure, had 2020 been a more empathic rejection of Trump by the electorate, he wouldnt have survived politically and gone away for good. But I dont see how 2020 being a landslide, with the GOP ending up in a deep hole in both the House and Senate, would have been a preferable outcome to what we got. Everything played out fine on Nov 3rd for both sides of the GOP, the Trumpists
and the swampy establishment Republicans like McConnell. But then Trump couldnt let it go and dramatically overplayed his hand with the election fraud stuff, culminating in the blown GA runoffs and the storming of the Capitol.
