I listened to a journalist describe this mechanic, and she explained that by publicly stating the order to attack Rafah Netanyahu is using it to
A. Put pressure on Hamas, as in a pre-negotiation tactic
B. Send a message to his domestic audience that Israel will continue the war, something which Netanyahu probably needs in order to remain in power.
Obviously this is just what I recently heard from a news outlet.
By himself meaning the war cabinet which got elected and has the power from the public to do so.
The war cabinet can order such a thing. I believe that over 70% of the public support it (probably more but I left some room)
That being said, Israel has no interest operating in rafah without Egypt’s consent. Which they technically gave already by warning Hamas that without a deal for ceasefire Israel will operate in rafah within 2 weeks.
As to Nethanyahu’s intentions.. I’m 33 years old and I never being able to guess them. I can’t stand him, never voted for him but thus far I believe he and the war cabinet are leading the war properly.
My only criticism is that we still don’t have a plan for the day after Hamas.
