Trump deserves credit for the deal he made, and he deserves blame for not managing to withdrawal from Afghanistan when he had 4 years to do it. He also had 4 years to get an infrastructure bill done, but was too busy cutting taxes for the rich, obstructing justice, and tweeting.
There's a lot of blame to go around with the Afghanistan war. It was a failure of politicians, the voters who chose those politicians, the military, the intelligence agencies, etc. For 20 years America tried to build an Afghan government and military that could stand on it's own. It failed spectacularly.
It would be easy to look at the Afghanistan withdrawal, and place all the blame on Biden, just like people blame him for everything that's gone wrong in the country under his leadership. I have a more nuanced view, where I recognize that history didn't start in January 2021, sometimes success isn't possible, the president doesn't control everything, and a lot of times there's no good choices for a president to make. When you drill down on the Afghanistan debacle, I don't see any major mistakes by Biden himself. Therefore, I view it as a win for him and his administration. The conventional wisdom on this issue is wrong.
