The age of consent in Minnesota is 16. The state can't imprison some adult for sleeping with a 17 year old, because the legislature never got around to making the age of consent 18. When prosecutors create some magical workaround that creates a new interpretation of a law where most consensual relationships between adults now becomes illegal, and uses it to imprison a political opponent in order to cover up the crimes of a public official, that becomes an issue that can't be dismissed by moral outrage over muh pedos. Those "predatory actions", under this legal interpretation, would cover normal relationships between consenting adults and give prosecutors the ability to lock up anyone anywhere. A man takes a girlfriend out to the movies for date night? That's sex trafficking.

There's a world of difference between a 18 year old taking his 17 year old girlfriend to the movies, and a 30 year old pedo hiring 6 underage women for sex and paying them with iPads instead of cash.

Yikes.

Not when the law treats them both as guilty. And that's the issue. Under the prosecutor's theory of the crime, both of those are sex trafficking offenses.

Good thing we have prosecutorial discretion.

Good thing we have the discretion of prosecutors who are bluntly weaponizing the law for political purposes? They dragged this guy out of his home while he was in the middle of uploading IlhanOmarDna.com, and then didn't even maintain a pretense, they openly stated he was arrested right then because the FBI knew about his DNA evidence. So we're creating a precedent that prosecutors could use to criminalize most adult, consenting relationships, and then dismissing concerns that could be abused by people who are already abusing it.



There's nothing in the law to distinguish them, and what sets apart that girl's role here from any person who plays matchmaker for her friends? She met a guy on a sugar daddy website and knew girlfriends of hers that were interested in sugar daddy relationships, so she hooked them up.
Its not much legal relevancy besides the ability of prosecutors to also go after the matchmaker, like they're doing here, she's charged as an accomplice.
