While praying you have to be totally sincere and honest. Sometimes when I am praying alone for reasons of giving praise, requesting something, or whatever it is, I find myself on the verge of tears or in tears because of how sincere, honest, and vulnerable I am allowing myself to be. I'm not saying you have to cry anytime you pray lol, I'm also too emotional of a person, I'm just saying there cant be any doubt in your mind.
Since you sort of would describe yourself as agnostic heres another useful way to think about praying. Some non religious folks pray to some archetype of their choosing which acts as their vehicle to bring their honest prayers unto the universal mind. If you havent heard about the universal mind I suggest learning about it, its pretty interesting. In gist, the universal mind describes the sum of all human consciousness. AKA we share one mind but we all have different physical manifestations. Ultimately, when lots of people consistently send their prayers for world peace, that will manifest in some way, shape, or form.
There is no timeline for how long a prayer "takes to work." The best thing you can do is pray with utter sincerity, consistency, and love.
Have a good day sir ^_^
Crying is a self-soothing behavior; you are likely to psychologically healing yourself of the massive hallucination you are creating when praying, which is
globally positive IMO because it probably includes alot of imbalances/stress from real world.
