and honestly even if you do we know for a fact Trump actively obstructed, and did far worse than Nixon, so the idea that "we can't rely on a political class to hold their own accountable" is really one that speaks to the downfall of the Republican party, not something you can apply universally to politicians. It's clear that Democrats still value norms. You can't simultaneously have "the left eats its own" and "Democrats won't hold their own accountable".

Nah bro, that's just fighting over purity.

Because norms don't overlap with that at all.

Easy to do in a hyper liberal state where the party knows they won't lose the seat.

Al Franken is a perfect example of what I was talking about. He wasnt forced to resign because Republicans successfully pressured him, or because he had fallen out of favor with his fellow Democrats on Capitol Hill - he had to resign because the lefty activist base of the party demanded his head. And their base did that because he had violated their new, ultra-strict code of conduct for how a man has to treat women. They imposed a new, lower tolerance for behavior they deem "sexist", and Franken had crossed this line.

So yes, Franken was eaten alive by his own party's base over ideological impurity. It's invalid to compare the Franken case with Trump impeachment 2.0, where it is the other side's base (and a few bitter neocons who were pushed to the sideline by Trump) who are calling for his head while his own party's base is still overwhelmingly behind him.

By the way, Kirsten Gillibrand, the NY senator who opportunistically spearheaded the calls for Franken's resignation (to position herself as the "candidate of the women" for her presidential run), has drawn a ton of bad blood; her career has basically been going downhill ever since.

edit: needless to say that the Dem base didnt give a flying fuck about a male abusing a female when it came to Jacob Blake or Raphael Warnock, that is, in cases where there would have been an actual political price to pay for sticking to their norms.

Difference between dems and GOP is m that Franken resigned over a stupid picture in the name of showing other side the high road while Gop was trying to elect a pedophile from Alabama to the senate. You guys hold the dems to a way higher standards then GOP.

Roy Moore was a low point for the GOP, no doubt about that. But just for the record: he is a despicable human being, but he's not a pedophile. He was preying on teenage girls, not children. Also note that the GOP and even Trump tried their best to prevent Moore from getting the nomination. The original sin in that case came from Alabama's primary electorate, who chose a guy like Moore in spite of the warnings by everybody. Supporting Moore after he had secured the nomination, and even sticking by him after the allegations had surfaced, was an embarrassment.

Regarding the higher standard point: we're holding Democrats to their own standard, the one they ostentatiously stake out so they can claim the moral high ground in political debates.

It's not hard to claim the moral high ground in discussions with the modern GOP. Especially since their platform is predominantly "fuck you, I got mine."
