I live a town over from where this happened. They were just arrested for murder.

There was no crime committed in their presence. Yet they acted like that was the case. And that's where shit started to hit the fan.

The right thing to do would have been to observe the guy, discretely and without pulled guns, and to call the police when they see him actually committing a burglary. Only when they themselves witness him attacking or otherwise imminently threatening bodily harm would it have been appropriate to arrest him at gunpoint.
