At any rate, an injury from shrapnel or flying glass or whatever seems more likely than even a glancing blow to his ear, its hard to imagine the very thin margin for a rifle shot to cause blood on someone's ear without visibly blowing a chunk out of their ear. Or head.

There is no visible wound anywhere at all. A bullet even glancing would have ripped off part of that ear.
