care to expand on that?
I fail to see how aiding a country vs an oppressor is not ok but helping a genocidal regime to kill natives serves our national interests
You're describing conflicts in moralizing terms. It says nothing about the dynamics of who benefits, what the impacts and costs are, what interests are served. Every country can call themselves a liberator fighting an oppressor. Israel was invaded and slaughtered indiscriminately, they are the underdog standing against a much vaster arab world. Hamas are the underdogs liberating gaza from their Israeli occupiers. Ukraine fights a noble battle against an invasion of Russian orcs. Russia defends its territory from western imperialists and color revolutions. All hollow exercises in blowing wind.
Supporting Israel serves our national interests because we actually get returns on that investment. They produce disportionate research and development in the sciences and military and intelligence. They serve as our only truly allied bastion of western reach in the mideast, stabilizing our presence and keeping the arabs and persians at bay. They are one of our close military allies under the full nuclear power umbrella- something more palpable than a NATO expanded past its relevance. If we ever betrayed Israel, all our other European allies would know its just a matter of time until they are next.
Ukraine was an overextension. They had been in Russia's sphere of influence for 500 years. If we could fold them into NATO and our sphere that would have been in our interests- but we couldn't. Because we knew Russia was more willing to act to defend them than we were to take them. We put up a color revolution to seize their government and supply arms to a proxy war, russia went to full blown direct war. Which they are winning. We come out of it with egg on our face, millions more welfare clients immigrating into the EU, Russia in full control of critical energy and food resources, a schism in the petrodollar that is letting the RMB replace it, and what do we get? Another black sea port in Odessa? Its not in our interests
