The GOP is trying to have their cake and eat it too. They NEED Trump to help get the vote out so that they can take back Congress in 2022. Trump was able to get more people to vote GOP than for Obama which is pretty impressive.
The GOP leadership wants to ignore Trump's absurd statements, keep him happy, and reap the benefits. It's very transactional.
Yes, that's obviously what they are doing. Use Trump's appeal to drive turnout among segments of the electorate where he's still a draw without paying the price in Trump-sceptic districts or states.
It's also what I want the party to be doing, in essense. Trump was a net positive for the GOP for a long time for three reasons. 1. he forced the out of touch GOP elites to drop some of the most unpopular parts of their platform. 2. he brought a lot of R-leaning low propensity voters to the polls. 3. he spurred a realignment in American politics which gives the GOP a coalition which is much more efficiently distributed in the Senate and the EC.
But now that the guy has outlived his usefulness and has become a liability, I want the party to keep him in the background as much as possible while not outright alienating his diehard supporters.
Btw: this is not something unusual in politics at all. The Democrats are also trying to appeal simultaneously to Berniebros, DSoA-types and NeverTrumpers. They are currently trying to talk a big game about big bold progressive change while actually doing very little in this regard as to not alienate the pivotal moderate suburban swing voters...
