Clinton's campaign that isn't engaging on policy specifics, so even that has become a "choose your own reality" adventure for certain audiences.
I'm sure there are a lot of reasons. All of them are going to play to Clinton's advantage given the contours of the race. Notice that neither Trump, the RNC, nor Congressional Republicans pushed back against Clinton's release yesterday; not only do they not know how, but they obviously don't have a competing proposal because they've never taken the issue seriously.

There are no fewer than 5 inaccuracies or outright falsehoods in your characterization; no one is going to bother wasting their time when you present such a comically-untrue portrayal.
The reason for the request IS simple: the dumbest among us don't know any better. It would be really convenient for them, in this case, to throw out longstanding precedent and invent and invent an entirely new standard for literally no reason whatsoever other than "because it would be really convenient for them."
