In hindsight, it's really funny and sad at the same time that Biden thought he could be FDR 2.0 at the beginning of his term. The biggest mistake him and his advisors made was misinterpreting the outcome of the 2020 election. Biden's mandate was to return the country to normalcy, rather than fundamentally change it.

Basically, they expected to win 2020 in a blowout, earning reliable majorities in the House and the Senate, backed by a forceful repudiation of Trump, and had prepared their agenda accordingly. When they only barely won an election which can be summarized as voters saying "yes, Trump had to go, but we don't trust Democrats with unchecked power", they refused to hear the message and pushed ahead with their spending spree, their maximally-porous borders agenda, the attempt at undoing all of Trump's foreign policies, the vaccine mandates, the never-ending race-baiting and so on and forth. The Biden stimulus is a prime example for this - justifed with the pandemic, but clearly intended to sneak in new, permanent entitlements which expand the scope of the welfare state.

Now, Biden and his handlers stand by dumbfounded as every aspect of his presidency is unraveling.
