How patronizing. The political class are not enlightened shephers whose job it is to show their uneducated, misguided sheep the way - they are serving at the behest of their voters to represent their interests.
If a politician doesnt like the views of his base and cannot bring himself to represent them anymore, be it out of ideological or moral reasons, then he is free to step down and allow someone else to represent them.
For far too long, Republican officials used the energy from their base, who cared about stuff like abortion or immigration, to get into power and delver them Wall Street tax cuts and foreign wars while treating their own voters with thinly veiled disdain.
The base is sick and tired of it, they're no longer having any of it.
This, by the way, is the secret sauce of Trump's unwavering support from the base. The people always sensed that the majority of GOP officials think of them as uneducated, unwashed rubes and proles, that they hate and loathe them behind closed doors . For all his flaws, failures, corruption and incompetence, Trump always made his base feel loved and respected, and they loved him back because of it.
Spare me the silly populist whining about elites not caring about the rubes back home.
We have an entirely different view of leadership. I believe representatives must, at times, make choices that may be unpopular with their voters, because it is the right thing to do. You clearly think that the will of the voters must be carried out, regardless of facts, evidence, the effect on the country, how crazy that will is, etc.
This sort of thinking is how the right-wing became so radicalized. Why would we tell voters what they don't want to hear? Just cater to every dumb impulse they have... it gets politicians votes and media personalities money. Surely this couldn't end badly.
