My honest opinion? He is a young and impressionable person who had right-wing political beliefs and was heavily influenced by the cult of MAGA. But as he got older he had a political ideological shift and now he had no outlet for his anger in the form of screeching about hanging Mike Pence so he went to the other extreme.

Oh and yeah, obviously he's mentally unwell. No sane person does this kind of thing.
