I would argue that, when taking your idea, and applying it to Israel, if Israel were to stop its rapid expansions in the west bank, israeli society could potentially break down, on the basis that this could be perceived as a punishment. the fact that israel is stealing this land (punishing the palestinians and removing their future) is not seen by israel as a punishment.
noting the historic culture of "this land is ours yesterday, today and tomorrow" no israeli leader would survive reversing, REVERSING settlement expansions. The map over time of the West Bank, tells its own story.
pre-October 7th support for conservative Net-and-yahoo government was waning. settlement policy was polling at all time lows. support for 2-state has risen for a long time.
i dont think its a stretch at all that post-war peaceful desires could arise from Israel. it happened in the USA after iraq and afghanistan. warmode mentality always runs out eventually.
