According to worldometers, they just had 60k new cases in a single day. What the fuck is going on there? Shouldnt the milder winter in CA help them deal with the virus? And didnt their governor and their mayors impose very early restrictions during the first wave and generally handle the pandemic with prudence and caution?

Could it be that they stopped "listening to the science", as they like to call it, now that the election is over? Could it be that the educated, enlightened, morally superior residents of Commiefornia actually are just as negligent, careless and tired of covid restrictions as the ignorant, deplorable hillbillies from flyover-country?

Imho, covid waves have a larger spatial component than most people acknowledge. Arizona is doing quite badly as well at the moment; while Texas and Florida have stable numbers. Seems like a wave is sweeping through the south west atm. Just like there was a regional wave in the upper midwest (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan) earlier this fall; this wave seems to have moved to Ohio and Pennsylvania, which are the current epicenter in the east.

To be fair, Trump definitely did undermine compliance with covid restrictions and public health measures among Republicans - and even in Commifornia, a sizable chunk of the population, around 25-33%, are Republicans.

Not really. Our rates of mask wearing were always better than that in europe. And most of the contagion comes from at home private events now.
