United States Representatives not allowing themselves to be treated like criminals makes them... toddlers?

I agree. They're sitting members of Congress, and the literal embodiment of government.

Weak.

At an airport, you dont know the people coming in, and you can reasonably expect them to contain a certain share of criminals.
By contrast, at the Capitol, you have a much smaller group who has access, you know everyone of them, and you can reasonably expect them to not be criminals who would exercise violence against their fellow congresspeople.

Treating Republican members of Congress like violent criminals who are an imminent danger to everyone around them surely is one heck of a way of signalling "lets unite and heal".

If you can legally prove that members of Congress actively supported or enabled the storming of the Capitol, then they shall be expelled from Congress and subsequently prosecuted. But until then, you have to treat them with some respect. These people represent hundreds of thousands of American voters.

But if they are all treated equally, what's the big deal? We're already making them wear masks.

Wearing masks is not inherently humiliating. Making people go through a metal detector is implicitly alleging that these people represent a level of danger and violent potential.

That's not true. Masks make you look weak. Masks make you look like you can't think for yourself. Masks are a divisive symbol.

See, that's the point: if these members of Congress refused to comply with the mask mandate in the House, I would agree that they're toddlers. But not when they refuse to go through a fucking metal detector.

I guess I go to enough events where it just doesn't bother me one bit.

Like I said: every sane person understands the necessity of metal detectors in vulnerable settings where a ton of strangers are going in and out every day, like airports. But in Congress, you know every single person with access to the House or Senate floor, and you can reasonably expect them to not start massacring their fellow members of Congress.
