To repeat what I've said many times, you tend to avoid seeing larger trends when Trump is involved. I didn't expect them to breach the capitol, but I was fully expecting riots as we get closer to inauguration. I would have actually been surprised if we didn't see it. Hell we had white supremacist riots in 2017 with the whole Charlotte NC stuff. It would be weird if they faded gracefully after such an intense victory party.
Like I said in this thread and others: empirical evidence actually suggested that Trump almost never follows through on his bombastic rhetoric, that he usually is all bark no bite. Furthermore, I would argue that it was a very valid and justifiable assumption, by me and others, that Trump's talk about the stolen election was primarly intended to save face with his base, and that he would try to pull a Grover Cleveland and run some sort of "permanent campaign" between now and 2024. Empirical evidence supports this opinion of mine, not yours. Time and time again, Trump has played with fire and maneuvered his own back against the wall - and time and time again, he had the awareness and instincts to pull back and (barely) turn the corner before crossing a line from which there was no coming back.
This time WAS different, this time he really went fully nuclear and burned everything down, including his own political career which objectively was not over. Had he shown just some restraint over the past weeks, the GOP would have held the Senate. And had he then left office without any dignity, bitching and moaning like the sore loser he is, but without inciting violence, he would still EASILY have been the favorite for the GOP nomination in 2024. Even from a purely self-absorbed and narcissistic point of view, what he did since November, and particularly what he did on Wednesday, made no sense.
