If legitimate conservative media covered this issue the way this NYT guy did, and a few high-profile Republican politics got behind it, my guess is it would've resulted in the same outcome, or perhaps an even better one. This isn't an all-or-nothing proposition.

Probably. My point still stands that this is just a bad issue for the GOP, and that they're well advised to keep as much distance from it as possible. If they tackle it, they're gonna offend a pillar of their coalition one way or the other.

This is probably the most out of touch position you've held about the GOP. Nobody wants to defend this stuff and the populist right-wingers could pretend it's a win against everybody they hate.

Yea right, the lefties will just label it mysoginist.

Its honestly the most important issue of our generation. Women are more likely to join onlyfans than they are to ever start a family. They actually think its a good idea.

Would evangelicals and other relgious conservatives really be thrilled by a stance of "adult movies are totally fine as long everybody is consenting and these girls who look like teenagers are 18+"? Would first amendment enthusiasts be thrilled by the implicit censorship and the encroachment of net anonymity? Would chamber of commerce Republicans really be thrilled by setting a precedence for government interventions against economic freedom if only the cause is deemed worthy enough?

Somehow I doubt that. But maybe I'm indeed just weird or out of touch. *shrug*

Only the last one is an actual important belief to the Republican party. The rest they really couldn't care less about.

Large parts of the party apparatus, but not necessarily the base. And yes, setting a precedent for government intervention is something that could backfire badly from a GOP pov.

I mean all the puritan bullshit the GOP espouses is show. The evangelicals don't actually value it. It's virtue signaling. There are no real "first amendment enthusiasts" in the Republican party either. The second they make their own platform the liberal bans are started. r/conservative always has a ton of "flair only" threads to keep liberals out and Parler has banned a ton of liberals. The only one they actually care about are the economic things, and the only reason they care about that is because they're paid to care about it.

The center of the issue is defending property rights and human rights. The porn industry is fraught with abuse and externalities. Regulations could benefit everyone
