WASHINGTON — A Tampa man who breached the U.S. Senate chamber carrying a Trump campaign flag was sentenced Monday to eight months behind bars, the first resolution for a felony case in the Capitol insurrection.

Paul Allard Hodgkins apologized and said he was ashamed of his actions on Jan 6. Speaking calmly from a prepared text, he described being caught up in the euphoria as he walked down Washington’s most famous avenue, then followed a crowd of hundreds up Capitol Hill and into the Capitol building.

“If I had any idea that the protest ... would escalate (the way) it did ... I would never have ventured farther than the sidewalk of Pennsylvania Avenue,” Hodgkins told the judge. He added: “This was a foolish decision on my part.”

Prosecutors had asked for Hodgkins to serve 18 months behind bars, saying in a recent filing that he, “like each rioter, contributed to the collective threat to democracy” by forcing lawmakers to temporarily abandon their certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over President Donald Trump and to scramble for shelter from incoming mobs.

His sentencing could set the bar for punishments of hundreds of other defendants as they decide whether to accept plea deals or go to trial. He and others are accused of serious crimes but were not indicted, as some others were, for roles in larger conspiracies.

Under an agreement with prosecutors, Hodgkins pleaded guilty last month to one count of obstructing an official proceeding, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop lesser charges, including entering a restricted building and disorderly conduct.

A Tennessee panel voted to remove a bust of Confederate General and Klu Klux Klan Grand Wizard Nathan Bedford Forrest from the state Capitol, according to multiple reports.

The vote comes months after the state’s Capitol and Historical commissions first voted to remove the bust, according to WZTV. Thursday’s vote by the Tennessee State Building Commission was the final step needed for the statue to be removed.

Forrest was a slave trader and Confederate General, and later became an early leader of the klan. The bust was first unveiled in 1978, drawing protests from African Americans, according to The Tennessean.


Gov. Bill Lee (R) recently changed positions on the bust and called for it to be removed after the police killing of George Floyd, The Associated Press reported.

The governor originally said in 2018 “the Ku Klux Klan is a part of our history that we’re not proud of in Tennessee, and we need to be reminded of that and make certain that we don’t forget it. So I wouldn’t advocate to remove” the bust, according to the AP.

But WZTV reported that Lee voted in favor of the removal Thursday.


The move comes on the heels of similar actions taken in other Southern states. On Saturday, a statue of Confederate Gen. Alfred Mouton was removed from the Lafayette City Hall in Louisiana, ending a decades-long dispute over the statute.

A week prior, the City of Charlottesville, Va., notably took down statues of Robert E. Lee and Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

A new congressional bill seeks to create a board to help rename more than 1,000 towns, lakes, streams, creeks and mountain peaks across the U.S. still named with racist slurs.

Why it matters: About 621 places have the word "negro" in them. New Mexico is home to a reservoir called Wetback Tank. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names oversees all naming decisions, but critics contend it's overwhelmed and slow to rename places despite public pressure.

Driving the news: The Reconciliation in Place Names Act, introduced Friday by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), would create an advisory board made of civil rights advocates and tribal members.

The board would accept proposals from tribal nations, state and local governments and the public on suggested name changes.
The advisory board would then make recommendations to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, the agency running the process for name changes.
Critics contend it isn't transparent. A government link exists where people can suggest name changes yet gives scant details on the names' status.
By the numbers: The database maintained by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names shows there are 799 sites containing the word "squaw" — a derogatory term for Native American women.

The places using "negro" include Big Negro Creek in Warren, Illinois — and Negro Foot, Virginia, an unincorporated community said to have been named in reference to an enslaved person whose foot was amputated to prevent escape.
Twenty-nine places contain the word "Chinaman" — an offensive term describing Chinese American men. They include Chinaman Hat in Wasco County, Oregon, and Chinamans Canyon in Las Animas County, Colorado.
In addition to Wetbank Tank reservoir in New Mexico's Sierra County, there are 12 places around the country with the term "greaser." Both are epithets used to describe Mexican Americans.
What they're saying: “We need to immediately stop honoring the ugly legacy of racism and bigotry, and that’s why I’m introducing the Reconciliation in Place Names Act with my colleagues,” Warren said in a statement.
“This is about ending egregious expressions of systemic racism and bigotry and taking a step toward dismantling white supremacy in our economy and society. It’s about building an America that lives up to its highest ideals.”
