DeSantis' lane is clearly to be the "trumpism without Trump"-candidate. For this to succeed, the supporters of trumpism must be convinced that the founder of their movement is no longer the best suited to lead it into the future. Any time Trump makes this case for DeSantis by his stupid attacks, he's doing him a favor. DeSantis can of course not win if he's perceived as an anti-Trump candidate in the sense that he disagrees with Trump on policy or vision. Where IceMage and I disagree is whether the sheer fact of running against Trump will already be enough for a critical mass of primary voters to perceive DeSantis as "anti-Trump" or "establishment".

I would go even further: it will imho not hurt DeSantis to attack Trump on issues where Trump undeniably fucked up in the eyes of his own base. For example he could accuse Trump of being too vaccine-friendly, or that he "enabled" Fauci and his ilk to lock the country down. Or that Trump's petty focus on relitigating the 2020 election has cost the party in the midterms.

In my view this is a perfect analysis.

Incidentally, it's obviously in Dem's best interest to prop up Trump as much as possible and hope DeSantis isn't the Repubcican at the top of the ticket. Fortunately, they are still so God damn hysterical about Trump that they'll never do this.

this can be done if it is shown the "vaccine" company(s) were being dishonest
Gov. Ron DeSantis says that his administration intends to hold vaccine manufacturers accountable

Lmao... what the hell is "Trump's leadership vision"? Please explain that one to me, because he's the most incompetent manager or leader of people I've ever seen.

What is going to matter is how DeSantis and Trump's conflict plays out. If DeSantis plays it as I think he should, he'll rarely go after Trump explicitly. He'll argue for better governance, competence, etc. But Trump is going to attack him endlessly, and I don't know how his non-responsiveness will play with Trump voters. It could easily make him look weak and he'll be another Republican frontrunner flameout like Jeb Bush or Scott Walker.

I never got the hype on Scott Walker. He wasn't particularly well known, whereas DeSantis is. He wasn't very popular (vote reelection by 6 points, faced recall), whereas DeSantis is. And he was a boring, stereotypical Republican in the old manner, i.e. loved by the Kochs, whereas DeSantis is a populist unafraid to break with Republican convention. DeSantis is just a middling public speaker, but aside from that, I don't see the similarities. Jeb Bush has been covered to death, he was a weak candidate at the wrong time, well out of public life with only a very unpopular last name to run on. DeSantis is governor, and Trump is doing his best to make his own life hell. There will be a time where DeSantis needs to respond, but not yet. Based on his press conference the other day, he's going to focus attacks on Trump's unpopularity and down ballot impact.

I'm 95% sure Trump wins the Republican primary, even if he gets indicted. Happy to take FG bets from anyone, 1:1.

Republicans and the right have been conditioned for 7 years that people who oppose Trump are bad and should be shunned/criticized. Every scandal under his administration was met with turning-reality-on-its-head narratives and circling the wagons(Hey Goom!). This position has been hardened to such an extent that after Trump's efforts to overturn a valid election in 2020, after he incited an insurrection on the Capitol, the right-wing media, politicians, and most importantly voters, stuck with him.

So the idea that DeSantis is going to get on stage opposing Trump and survive makes no sense at all. And it's not going to just be Trump vs. DeSantis, it's going to be 2016 replayed, with several "Team Normal" candidates and Trump. Trump wins that easily.

People who pretend DeSantis has a chance do not understand the right-wing or the Trump cult. These are the same people who minimized Trump's election denial before and after the 2020 election, believing that no harm would come because of it, and then January 6th happened.

Agree with that.

I don't think there is a strategic problem for Democrats. They can attack DeSantis as "too establishment", as a lackey of big oil, as a faux populist who's pretending to be Trump 2.0, but is actually Romney 2.0. This way, DeSantis is weakened in the GOP primary against Trump, increasing the likelihood that Democrats get the easier opponent - but if DeSantis wins the GOP nomination anyway, these attacks will still be effective and define him negatively in the eyes of voters who only start paying attention late in the race.

Support for Trump continues to collapse, with Republican leaning voters moving increasingly into DeSantis's column. He's a bit unique this cycle in that I can't remember when we last had a non-incumbent with this level of early support.

The risk right now is that Trump wants to make an attempt at a third party run, but I don't know if he could stomach coming in 3rd place and being a true mega/maga loser. I think his shot at winning the primary is increasingly remote.

Trump 3rd party would indeed be the path Democrats have to defeat DeSantis. The play is clearly to stroke his fragile ego as possible either way.
