It's just common knowledge about the housing market in China. You won't be considered for marriage until you own a house and it's commonplace for parents and grandparents to all help save for a house for their sons.

There's no investments that give safe reasonable returns outside of real estate. It's why people flocked to savings accounts that gave 4% interest rates before they were revealed to be a risky investment and the scam collapsed.

I live and grew up in Canada, can't wait to leave. Ugly cities with minimal transit, burgeoning homeless population in every city, a political system that can't address a single major problem, pathetic little American satellite state full of racist yahoos whose entire culture can be boiled down to being American but thinking they're better than Americans because they have a (dying) universal health care system for most but not all parts of the body.
