Because the lack of any objective evidence? Usually people believe things because they have evidence, like for example if they win the lottery, they believe it when the money is on their bank account or because the answer is extremely plausible like if I say to you I am 38. You probably believe me, because - as you said - why not? There is plenty of 38 year olds, so the claim isnt very much out of the ordinary, its nothing special so to say.
God on the other hand is a VERY extraordinary claim.
There is no objective evidence for him, so thats out of the question.
Also its not like there are gods everywhere and you just look at them or call them or anything, so you wouldnt just believe it randomly.
So my question as an atheist is, why do believers believe?
If all they come up with is personal, unverifiable experiences, than there is no reason to believe in god at all.
