Setting up defense is pointless when the enemy has an overwhelming strength and numbers advantage. Preventing the invasion of Ukraine via military deterrence would only have worked if the West had been shipping metric fucktons of weapons and equipment to Ukraine for years. Which would have given Putin the justification for an invasion in the first place, so not a good idea. And it's not like the Ukrainian leadership is super trustworthy...
Imho, the bitter reality is that we should have pressured Zelensky into acquiescing in political neutrality behind the scenes. The NATO and the EU obviously couldn't publicly accept Putin's demands, some sort of Brezhnev Doctrine 2.0, or call it "Putin Doctrine" if you want, about 'the limited sovereignty of Russia's smaller neighbors'... but from a realpolitik perspective, it would have been the smarter choice.
Anyway, this invasion is clearly unjustified (do you seriously believe the Russian propaganda about the Ukrainians bombing Donezk and Luhansk?) and an egregious violation of international law and basic human decency, and Russia will pay a heavy price. This was a reckless and uncharacteristically irrational move by Putin. I still don't really get why he pulled the trigger tbh.
i am puzzled as well, thats why i kept saying for a while that i dont see a full invasion happening
cant say i have seen putin lose his shit like that before (did you watch his latest statement? somehow he looks different than before)
also agreed on the ukranian government and west failing to make them a neutral state, thats why this mess is also on us
its pretty cheap to hide behind passive aggressive bs while pushing russia into a corner
an actual defense would still have been a thing imo to prevent an invasion, because this war is not exactly popular
however in this scenario putin knows that his own losses wont be high, its a blitzkrieg power grab
