This might sound strange, but I know the feeling of not having a relevant party in my own country which I can wholeheartedly support. At least you Americans can blame your political misery on the two party system - here, we have 6 major parties and every single one of them is a dumpster fire. Additionally, every realistic coaltion after the general election this fall is depressing. *sigh*
Regarding California again: Silicon Valley alone doesn't explain why inequality in California exceeds that of states like Georgia or New York. The fact that an extremely high cost of living has driven out the middle class and that a huge amount of piss poor, underpaid farm workers came into the state also contributes to California's extreme socioeconomic stratification - and those things can be traced back to Democratic policies.
So, northern and southern Cali are totally different beasts. Northern Cali is basically Alabama, with a striking amount of similar economic problems.
Then there's the cities where they get massive amounts of money from East Asia, massive amounts of investment from silicon valley, etc. etc.
Lots of things all coming together to create horrible inequaltiy.
IMO we should largely move beyond representative democracy. We live in a time when the entire country has internet and we can easily allow people to vote using public/private keys. We should largely retool the education system to be comprehensive and thorough, with a large amount of philosophy, mathematics, science, and history and retool society accordingly. We could easily have a public/private key system with real-time photo ID verification on our phones and it would lead to more secure, easily auditable elections, encourage voter participation, and we could even have apps to read the prospective bills right on our phones weeks before voting deadlines.
