This is obviously foolish because I wouldn't want Bill Barr to be denied communion for doing his job. The death penalty is federally legal and Barr was absolutely correct to enforce the law. I don't want Amy Coney Barrett to be denied communion for following SCOTUS precedent and allowing fag marriage. It's better to just deal with personal transgressions and as far as I know, Biden hasn't caused someone to get an abortion.

I don't know that the new death penalty teaching by the church is equivalent to abortion.

But even so, you could make a distinction between enforcing the law and promoting a law. Biden's policy has been to override existing law limiting abortion and expanding it. That's different from simply "enforcing existing law".

To add, why are you prioritizing the political currents of the day over church teaching? Obviously we don't want the church to become some irrelevant moral scold, but there are moments when she should influence the conversation.

I'm not. The teachings of the Church remain supreme. You have to ask yourself though: why now when abortion has been legal for nearly half a century?

Honestly I'm ambivalent about what the bishops do. I trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But as a Catholic I don't look at these decisions from some strategic position where what appeals to the most people is right. The bishops taking an orthodox position might not attract more people in the pews, but that doesn't mean it's wrong.

To add, I don't think it's an easy question they are faced with. That's why I won't judge too harshly, whichever way they decide to go.

My point is that this seems political as opposed to being rooted in doctrine.

I really don't think that's true, but even if it were, it's a can that's been kicked down the road far too long. The summaries from secular newspapers cannot define what the bishops do.

Tcock's argument is literally unprovable.

How do you fucking prove that something isn't political?

Fuck off, tcock.
