Also really depends how the question is framed. If it's flat "sex appeal" then the graph isn't surprising. Women are less interested in looks, like you pointed out. Now, if it was phrased as "quintile sexiness" then he would have a point. Basically, 2.5 wouldn't be average in the former, so there's no sense saying a woman who's average rating was a 2 views "most men as below average".

All of the women I grew up with are single with dogs and are turning 30 soon. Maybe 1% took the traditional route instead of pricing themselves too high and removing themselves from the dating market.

The tldr version is that men placing higher importance on looks and women placing higher importance on (socioeconomic) status is a well-established scientific fact. There are sound theoretical frameworks explaining why that is, and it's been confirmed empirically over and over again by actual scientific studies.

Your key fallacy is to think that dating apps were in any way shape or form representative of the larger dating market. They are not, they are characterized by an absurd gender ratio and steering disproportionate attention to superficial aspects like looks or a polished bio.
