'Help is on the way' with U.S. Congress ready to pass $900 billion COVID-19 aid bill

The White House-backed bill includes $600 payments to most Americans as well as additional payments to the millions of people thrown out of work during the COVID-19 pandemic, just as a larger round of benefits is due to expire on Saturday.

“I expect we’ll get the money out by the beginning of next week - $2,400 for a family of four,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC, referring to the payments to most individuals.

The legislation also expands a small-business lending program and steers money to schools, airlines, transit systems, and vaccine distribution.

This was my favourite one from CRA after this had all happened. They sent out "Education Letters". Which is really a "you have to repay $18,000 because letter"

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/cerb-covid-coronavirus-pandemic-1.5840550

They are letting people repay it overtime but still it's quite the debacle. No one here has money left to repay, they will end up being garnished for years to come.

Im ok with the gap in the system that allowed this because we needed to help a lot of people quickly. I have no sympathy for the people that were gaming the system though getting support they didn't need.

Here in Canada the government made it far to easy to get $2,000 a month. Clear eligibility requirements existed but no screening process existed in order to roll out money fast and thus it was only a press of a button and an online form.

Now a significant portion of applicants need to pay back up to $18,000. People are screaming. From just a pure anecdotal account, almost every single person in my town applied, they all purchased new ATV's Ski-doos, etc. It's been pretty disgusting. Entire familys of everyone 18 and older applying. Its been wild....

sounds like you live in a town full of idiots :\

since day 1 the 2000 has been taxable and the government has said it's paying out now and punishing later WRT abusers

c'est la vie, as it allowed the process to be easier for the people who needed it... and if the punishment is that modest, nobody who enjoyed a 3 year interest free loan should have any grounds for complaint

well you know there will be a fair bit of complaining but yeah, i agree that this process is much better as it allowed direct payments to people in need. better than the USA where Congress spent 6 months to give some citizens $600 per person in a household
