Stoics were materialists, and the closest comparison on Earth now to Stocism is Buddhism. Their ethics are very similar (virtue based not act based), their metaphysics are nearly identical, and their epistemological beliefs are about the same.

Also his quote in the OP is just a rephrasing of The Euthyphro by Plato.

He definitely was a good example of a philosophical king, still made some very human errors, like choosing nepotism over merit in descendent.
