Why make apologies for jackals in the media and overreactions of talking heads, pundits and legislators who fan the flames of kneejerk ignorant hatred?
In a reasonable world, AD's behavior here would be somewhere between socially unacceptable but legal and protected, to being the most petty of civil infractions that at worst carries a small fine, or slap on the wrist, or as you say, parenting class.
And through legal recourse, thats what its obviously headed towards. But not before damage is done on the national stage far, far more egregiously. Whos career will get nuked, his or goodells? Will there be overreactions from an NFL covering their own asses?
I didn't apologize. I don't care about his career.

if nobody knows, is still not crossing the line
No, the rule of thumb was a law that used to exist in the United States that restricted wife/child abuse in the sense that you could hit your wife and kid with a switch, as long as the switch wasn't thicker than your thumb.
It is an archaic law, but I suppose some people have its proponents still. I mean if we had kept the law manly men could have beat down the threat of feminism.
