And since runoffs are always decided by base turnout, the GOP is in a position where the consequences of "losing" the base by publicly turning on Trump would be monumental. There's no doubt that a significant portion of the country does not live in reality. I think it's more of a right wing problem than a left wing though when you look at who holds the power. Ideally, these lunatics will simply become disengaged from politics once everything becomes boring again. As for unity, I've been saying for years that MOST people would like the opposition destroyed. You can infer that quite easily through Congress' approval rating versus local Congressional approval ratings. Having said that, our elected officials should do their best to be above it all and I think Biden is the right man for the job there. Hyperpolarization is easily one of our greatest national security threats.
