I'm not saying they're in a worse spot right now than most of the rest of Europe, but they're not really better off either. They're in the same spot as the rest of us, but paid a higher price in terms of human lives to get there.

The whole logic of the Swedish approach was "yes, we're putting up with a higher up front death toll, but then we'll enjoy (full or at least partial) herd immunity and get across the winter with a lower death toll and/or while shutting down less than the other countries". This argument turned out to be wrong, plain and simple.

They haven't had enough infections to reach herd immunity. By the time the vaccine rolls out they still won't have enough infected peoples to have reached herd immunity. But on the other hand, everywhere is fucked right now. I don't think there is a solution, so maybe their way allowed for people to live a happier life than more quarantined countries.

Yeah, that's a fair take. I'm not sure though if their approach would have been possible in places like France or Germany. The Swedes are an extremely compliant people with unusually high levels of trust in its government and willingness to voluntarily follow public health recommendations (like social distancing). It definitely wouldnt have worked in Murica.

If that decision was in America we'd be in Mad Max territory in a month. At least we have enough smart people to make the vaccine so we can get bailed out
