They get PAID to enforce public events. Trump has a history of not paying.

their job is to enforce the law, not act as private security. a cop at an event is law breaking prevention, not law breaking enforcement. that's why they charge for it, and what the controversy stems from. event security isn't their job, that's a whole other job.

i worked event security all through highschool, cops got paid to moonlight at those events. they dont just show up.

This is a complete non-scandal and a joke of a story. Police in Minneapolis do not charge for events all the time, in fact, they never have. No politician ever has been required to pay associated costs of policing, traffic changes, traffic controls, etc at these events. Whether you think they should have a cost sharing program, the fact is they dont. Event security has always been provided by the city. And legally, there's no way they could have required Trump to pay. And not only that, they had already signed a contract with AEG specifying explicitly that the campaign would not be liable for associated costs beyond the venue's rent. And then to make it an even further farce, Obama held a political rally at the same Target Center back in 2009, and the total estimated cost was $20,000 in policing/traffic. Of which Obama paid $0. He was neither asked to pay any of it nor did he pay it, same with all the politicians holding rallies since then. And here Trump shows up and Frey tried to demand that Trump pay $530,000 up front to cover the same policing/traffic, or else he wouldn't be allowed into the center.
And then Trump called out Frey on twitter, they locked horns, and Frey backed down like the punk bitch he is, Trump won with no concessions.

I'm used to my state being an embarrassment thanks to the likes of Frey and Omar

Also this thing where he changed the rules so police can't appear in-uniform at political events one week before Trump showed up- it comes after they were required to stand on camera in uniform at other politicians events like that Obama visit. They were told they had to be political props then and complained about it at the time, the didn't get a choice. I'm not a fan of Kroll in general, but jesus if he's not in the right a hundred times over on this story.

Preet interviewing George Conway(husband of Kellyanne Conway and frequent critic of the orange man). He wouldn't talk about Kellyanne, but otherwise a great conversation.

i have zero doubt the motivations behind this are deeply political. i'm just ok with it because i think free police protection at political rallies at the cost of the taxpayer is stupid and should be changed.

"but but but it's so expensive" some will say. good. any amount of money we can take from campaigns to cut their advertisements is a good thing. political ad season is worse than road construction season.

eh, they don't even do it for sporting events. It was pretty weak when Frey's office was asked about whether any events have ever been forced to make similar payments and their answer was that they "had conversations" with sports teams and "wanted to be more proactive in the future". Maybe there's a valid debate over what the public policy should be, but instead of 'having a conversation', let alone passing a new law or policy, they just cranked it up to 20/10 and tried to spring it last minute on Trump, completely unprecedented, unenforceable and in violation of contract

i see a slight distinction. athletic events are predominately apolitical. while people might not be sports fans, they would certainly have less of a gripe with tax money going to protect people at those. whereas in a deeply politicized america about 50% of people might oppose police pretense at a rally based on political affiliation.

to me the issue stems from tax spending. employing people to enforce the law then paying them to baby sit. i dont even have an issue with cops on the street for protests outside, as that's largely on public property and a hotbed for violence.

the way it should run is that chiefs should allow anyone that wants to moon light to moon light on a volunteer basis. if the numbers run short the campaign can ask for X# of more cops and pay per cop. that's how private security worked at all the sporting events i was involved in. 95% min wage rent a cops, 5% actual cops there in an official capacity but volunteering. and they get a floor spot for the game, its a great deal for them.

in today's aim at election interference Joe Biden (D) is told 'no' by the facebook when he cried like a little sissy and reported a Trump ad

The location for that rally is like 500 yds. from Ilhan Omar's 5th district. LOL

It's right in the middle of the 5th district (which is basically the city of Minneapolis and a few inner ring suburbs).

The Vice President will be out here in Lakeville about 4PM at Safety Signs. I drove by there twice this morning. Lot of pedestrian barriers up that weren't there yesterday.

Yeah, we frequently play Pokémon at Casperson Park nearby, and people on Discord this morning have said there's already a heavy police presence there. Pence better get in and out quick. Those Pokémon ain't gonna catch themselves.
