Of course, the media outlets which are supposedly biased to the left and "fake news" will put this declaration in context, while the right-wing outlets will air it uncritically.

Sicher, aber Ihr Englisch ist grundsätzlich fließend, und Ich spreche nur Englisch.

that's fundamentally different though. i use english basically every day, it's significantly simpler than german, and it's much more prevalent in our daily lives than german is in english speaking countries. that's why i think the comparison with my french is much fairer, since it's been ages since i 'learned' (my teachers would probably protest that notion) it, and hardly ever used it since.
