Appropriately I've been thinking of rereading The Plague, what with the times and all. I think if Nevada reinstates a stay at home and I end up furloughed again I'll probably bust it out and read it, along with some of his other stuff. I remember being very taken with The Plague when I read it back in 2009 or so, I think maybe it'll be even more significant now.

On topic, Nevada's governor Steve Sisolak has tested positive for COVID. He issued a statement a few days ago saying if the state doesn't lower the positive rates that he'll move us back into "phase 2" of quarantine. I don't see a scenario where that happens, especially with a lot of the Trumpers steadfastly ignoring his pleas and thinking he's a piece of shit (people commonly refer to him as "Sissylack" out here for his precautions regarding the virus).

I was on the way to my second job tonight and got called off right as I was parking because of how slow it is there. Our GM (we work at a restaurant on Fremont street) said it was so slow last night and that he fully believes us to be shut down soon. Personally, I don't think the company survives the plague and I think there are a lot of companies and firms in the same position who survived the first wave of quarantine, spent a lot of money to equip themselves to reopen with "precautions", mainly plastic barriers between gaming spots at bar tops and other partitions, who will not be able to whether another shutdown plus slow period following the easing of quarantine.

Bad times ahead for us peons in service.

It's a shame we can't turn off America's rugged individualism for six months to overcome a pandemic.

But that's the crux: the premise of "if we clench our buttholes for X weeks/months and do the right thing, then we will overcome the pandemic" is fundamentally flawed.

1.: no one has a timeline for when things can get back to normal.
2.: strict lockdowns and bringing case numbers way down only helps long term if the country goes into isolation and shuts its borders down until a vaccine has been rolled out. That's what CN/SK/JP/AUS/NZ are effectively doing. If you dont isolate your country after the strict lockdown, then the virus will be brought into the country again.
3.: even when case numbers were brought down a ton by a strict lockdown and it was ensured that the virus would not be reintroduced from abroad, you still have to stay on top of things domestically in terms of contact tracing, isolating and quarantining contact persons, etc. pp. Many activities and events, like open clubs and bar, or stadiums at full capacity, will still not be feasible. Masking would still be necessary. Social distancing would still be necessary.

Simply put, it is impossible to "overcome" the virus until we have herd immunity either from a vaccine or from 70%+ spread throughout the population. And until recently, no one could have even pinned down the start of vaccinations with a precision of more than several months. Even with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine being on the final lap, we still dont really know how many months it will take until enough people have been vaccinated to make a difference.

At bold, there is literally no reason that this cannot be accomplished

This is the point. You won’t “overcome it” (who is saying you will?) by instituting these measures, you will by time for your healthcare systems not to collapse

Not sure why this same circular argument has to happen every 3 days

Because every 3 days, someone again brings up the same old, simplified argument that "if only these other idiots could do the right thing, our problems with this pandemic would go away".

People are not refusing to make tough choices and big sacrifices for big and immediate gain, they are refusing to make big sacrifices just to end up in the same place they are right now. There simply is no positive reward, and that's what makes it so psychologically tricky to get people to comply with the covid measures. This is even more true for a virus like this one where the risk is so massively stratified by age, with large segments of the population only facing very miniscule personal risk from the virus if we're being honest.

My inner neck beard anarchist wants to believe this so bad.

What’s your solution to “giving an inch”? Disregarding mitigation efforts, protesting, etc?

You are making this black and white. If people could do every action you bolded, our problems would be drastically reduced. A vaccine was always the end game but we all knew we had to get there. The shame is that we will fall short of the target by just a couple months and in doing so will have a lot of unnecessary deaths and medical bankruptcies.

“Large population only facing miniscule risk of we’re being honest.”

Unfortunately, this is not being honest. When hospitals are full, there are no beds , for anything. All demographics, all ages are affected. Your 20 year old with meningitis, no bed. Your 50 year old with a heart attack, no bed. Jesus Christ this is not rocket science

Ice mages point was for america to turn off their “exceptionalism” so that outcome doesn’t happen. America is just too exceptional and because of lack of immediate positive feedback as you described, many people will lose their lives and their homes.

Sometimes people have to be leaded and told what to do when there isn’t a pot of candy sitting right in front of their face. In America this is certainly the case. Ice mage is totally correct, several more months of disciple would have saved tens of thousands of lives and millions of dollars. Would have. It’s too late now. People not wanting to make changes to their lives to stay in the same place, will now end up in a much worse place.

Masks and social distancing use rate was about 80% in March before the government made it mandatory (higher rate than Europe).

The state governments only divided the public with their tyranny.

What the government should have done was a pay incentive for taking off from work when sick to quarantine.

Protestors should be jailed if they don't follow laws (state registered protest, violence).

Where are you getting that 80% number from? I wasn’t even wearing a mask in March, it wasn’t until later when they became more widely used and later mandatory did I finally get one.

I also routinely have seen social distancing guidelines completely ignored then up until now. Well, I guess excluding when everything was pretty much shut down outright.

Go lie to the mirror man

Nobody wants to hear your nonsense here.

Mask compliance has never been this high, now or then of anywhere in between.

30% of the population thinks it’s fake still. Go to bed
