Danish parliament bans the wearing of face veils in public

Parliament voted on Thursday for the ban proposed by the centre-right government, which says veils are contrary to Danish values. Opponents say the ban, which will take effect on Aug. 1, infringes women’s right to dress as they choose.

Under the law, police can instruct women to remove their veils or order them to leave public areas. Justice Minister Soren Pape Poulsen has said that officers would in practice fine them and tell them “to go home”.

Fines would range from 1,000 Danish crowns ($160) for a first offence to 10,000 crowns for a fourth violation.

France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and the German state of Bavaria have all imposed some restrictions on full-face veils in public places.

Denmark has struggled for decades with how to integrate non-Western immigrants into its welfare state. Public debate intensified in 2015 with the arrival of large groups of refugees from conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere.




Personally, I don't care what the reason is, they should be illegal in ANY western country.

police violence is a 'false narrative'. the thousands of photos and videos documenting it are just out of context and really show brave police forces chasing out of control batons that were trying to assault civilians, and self-inflicted headwounds of catalonians unhappy with the fact they have to live there - one policeman even bravely intervened when a possessed catalonian tried to drag himself out of a building by his hair. such heroes... and people wonder why the constant 'fake news' screeching from the right, whenever the evidence doesn't fit their narrative, has become completely ineffective...

It's not about freedom. it's about being able to identify people. You know.... security cameras, picture IDs etc.
Let's just forget the fact that in the middle east in the 70's the women were rebelling against having to wear a bag over their head.

Now, all of a sudden when most Euro countries are complaining and bringing in laws to prevent it, middle eastern women are.... complaining !?!


I even posted about the NYC woman cop who was wearing more or less, a hoodie under her cop hat. Just what we need in a cop I said... the lack of peripheral vision.
But even more important, is the security/ID thing. Just what the ever more volatile world needs, an entire group running around with masks on. :/

They already have to take them off at airports, so less of the bullshit. You support the government policing what people can and can't wear, which is ridiculous in any civilised society.

you can wear clothes, the burqa (and modifications) is a symbol of the brutal oppression of women in islam and no human being would ever wear such a thing without being forced to or receiving serious brainwashing

The Burqa (and modifications) are items of clothing. Its symbolic meaning is subjective for the most part and while I agree it is a sign of oppression for many Muslim women, there are millions who freely choose to wear it. The bottom line is that the government is telling people what they can and can't wear. You can't deny or get around that simple fact, no matter how you try and present the burqa as something entirely distinct from clothing.

Think what you want. Will you be so happy to endorse this viewpoint of yours if some religion comes along and decides that it's their belief to carry bombs strapped to their chests.
No one is forcing those in the middle east to migrate to Europe or the US.

You stick u;p for the women wearing masks, but won't allow me my beliefs. Strange logic you have there.

It's stupid to allow people from a wildly different religion and culture to walk around in western society, masked. Most of Europe has already wised to this fact.

I guess they are all liars and islamaphobes as well. What's next on your agenda, make it illegal to tell criminal to remove their ski masks? Even though it's their belief that the ski mask should remain on.
