House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday she and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin must reach an agreement within 48 hours if they want to pass a coronavirus stimulus relief bill before Election Day.
"The 48 only relates to if we want to get it done before the election, which we do," Pelosi said in an interview on ABC's "This Week." "But we're saying to them we have to freeze the design on some of these things. Are we going with it or not? And what is the language."
Trump has 48 hours to negotiate a stimulus if he really wants it done before the election. Lets see if he puts America ahead of his ego.
The problem in this case is not the president's ego, it's the fact that the Democrats are not genuinely interested in passing such a stimulus bill before election since there is zero upside for them in doing so, only downside (it could potentially boost the president's reelection chances). Therefore, they have stacked their proposal with all sorts of poison pills in an attempt at achieving what's politically expedient for them (no stimulus before the election) while being able to blame Republicans.
Another factor is that the fiscal hawks among the GOP Senate caucus are secretly not keen on passing another stimulus anyway.
On this particular issue, Trump is the least of our concerns.
