"its only 400$ a bottle and cures people" - endlesssky, this week, again aging like milk in a hot car in the sun.

I never said it was a cure. The drug is meant to increase survival rates not stop symptoms.

little to no effect on which metric?

iirc, remdesivir was not lowering mortality, but did shorten the duration of hospitalization. if true, this would still be helpful in situations where hospitals are overwhelmed and ICU capacities run low.

Little to no effect on mortality , haven’t gone into detail in it tho just read the headline and spammed group chats

Recovery trial showed improvement in both mortality and hospital course. Definitely still has use but longer hospital courses are already associated with high mortality rates so with a powered enough study I would imagine you would see this indirect effect. Recovery was >10k but there were a lot of different arms and I doubt Remdesivir arm had 2750. I’ll check it out later. A weird era when hospitals around the country/world are reacting to this data in live time and having it change this fast

Sounds like Gilead was pushing a favorable study to monetize its discarded malaria drug Remdesivir...

Well let’s remember recovery trial was a multi centered Multi region study, not corporate run

I just glanced at recovery trial and mortality rate at 14 days was improved, so any WHO benchmark <14 days, not showing improvement in mortality rate, doesn’t invalidate the recovery trial

Aka potentially a lot of noise (Myself guilty) for no new data

The survival rate is 99.5%.

... so the maximum possible improvement is 0.5%...

so 400$ / bottle for someone is a rip off since they'll already survive without it.

go fund a study of 1,000 faties taking it and expose the BBC with your great knowledge.

Also it doesn’t say their inclusion criteria for patients who received Remdesivir. If a patient requires a large amount of oxygen Remdesivir has been shown to make no difference , per recovery trial, and it isn’t used then. If WHO combined all the numbers then I can see how they ended up with this null verdict. In the 17pahe released article it doesn’t state what level of oxygen requirement was exclusion criteria, if any. Per recovery, it only shows benefit when given early

I've read the mortality rate of those being admitted to hospital has reduced from 30% during March/April to 14% now. Can you summarise the reasons why the mortality rate has halved?

I know that we're using Dexamethasone when patients need oxygen but I've also heard mention of a more 'holistic approach' that has helped to save lives in contrast to the focus on the lungs earlier on in the pandemic.
