I've been trying to encourage my buddy for years now to lose weight. His health insurance threatened to drop him in his early 20s due to his high risk of mortality.
He had the works going on - morbid obesity, high blood pressure, triglycerides at an unsafe level. He makes progress sometimes but always gets discouraged, which sucks.

I doubt he's ever going to lose the weight, and it's not just because the nutritional sciences are basically a step up from witchcraft, it's mostly because there are very few people at his size who have dropped that kind of weight and kept it off. He's probably got nobody to relate to.

Don't get me wrong, there are great diets out there (Lyle McDonald's Rapid Fat Loss /PSMF for one) that could get the job done no problem. I run a PSMF every year to get lean for the summer season. If I ever get cancer it messed with the wrong guy.

Actually if anybody is interested in losing weight you can hit me up over PM. I'm pretty sure I had a nutritional thread here on JSP a few years back but no idea where it's at or if it's worth reading.

One of my buddies went from morbidly obese to average... and he's managed to stay the same size since. I've heard said that people basically have to get so disgusted with themselves that they are forced to change. It's all about gaining some life momentum.

I feel like Lyle's rapid fat loss is a bit too extreme for someone who hasn't developed any self-control with eating. If you do it right, it can be an insane transformation though. I would recommend the warrior diet before PSMF. Or just go vegan. :P

would you shame addicts as well?

we encourage people to kick most addictions already with the exception of addiction to food where anything short of accepting their excuses and coddling them is seen as shaming

That's good to hear. I'm not sure my buddy is ready to make the transition yet. It's pretty easy to get ahead of yourself mentally and psych yourself out over all the possible issues (diabetic ketoacidosis, elective surgery, etc). Did he end up having to get some skin removed?

I like the PSMF a lot. In six weeks you can go from pretty fat to not bad, and any brain fog you usually get in the mornings is completely gone. It's about as fast and dramatic as weight loss can get without losing much muscle.

None of my lifts really went down the last time, which is not something I would safely say with veganism. Everybody I see who's vegan ends up skinny fat or unable to maintain muscle.

cut or limit processed foods.

balance your omega 3 and omega 6 naturally. Do some individual research, so you can make your preferences.

With this strategy, most people will not be in the obese range. A diet should not make you feel deprived or like shit.

We don't shame them though. Or at least, people who aren't assholes don't and shaming is counter-effective anyway.

it's true we don't shame them but when people like tess munster and whitney thore are seen as an inspiration, it's time for drastic measures

mother nature certainly has no problem shaming them from the looks of it

LOL

But yeah I think the best attitude to have is compassion and empathy, just like it is for everything else. We can recognize it as a problem and try to solve it without being cruel, instead being kind and understanding. That's how we should act all the time in every situation.
