Steve Scully, the designated moderator for the 2nd presidential debate between Trump and Biden, has been an intern for then-Senator Biden when he was in college, later worked as a staff assistant in Ted Kennedy's communications office, and in 2016 retweeted a nytimes article/headline titled "No, not Trump. Not ever. - Voters deserve respect, but his year, their candidate does not."

I expect a perfectly fair and 100% impartial moderation.

Fantastic post, couldnt have said it any better!

Pres. Trump is likely better served with a moderator like this. Maybe knowing this he will just pay attention to debating his opponent instead of talking to Wallace. he was so busy interrupting everything he let Wallace cut off Biden’s rambling and ridiculous non-answers multiple times

So you're saying Trump hired an incompetent campaign team to negotiate the moderator?

Journalists are a very liberal bunch, it's not like there was a huge choice of moderators without some degree of liberal bias who would, at the same time, be palatable to Biden's campaign. Picking a more strongly biased but pushover guy like Scully probably seemed like the wiser option to Stepien.

But yes, since we're talking about it: I indeed think that Trump has run a bad, ineffectual and incompetent campaign in 2020. Much worse than his 2016 campaign.

I mean, Trump went through like 3 campaign managers in 2016, right? He's probably just as incompetent.

Dunno, but his 2020 campaign just feels so different. At least toward the end, his 2016 campaign had definitely hit its stride. In 2020... not so much. Perhaps my perception is warped, or the novelty has just worn off. Or perhaps his outsider message just doesnt work anymore now that he's the incumbent. Or his populist themes are just not in demand during a pandemic which calls for technocratic competence rather than leadership based on gut instinct.

Either way, his 2020 campaign comes across as far less energetic and much more ill-fated. In 2016, he landed zinger after zinger on Hillary; in 2020, nothing sticks with Biden. In 2016, everytime he fucked up, there was an external event which bailed him out. In 2020, everytime he gets even the modest poll movement in his favor, some external event or his own bad decisions thwart any momentum.

It feels so different because what we need is different. In 2016, there was a thirst for an anti-establishment candidate. The world was a much better place so we could take "the risk" so to speak. In addition, Hillary was just unlikable. Period.

2020 calls for something different so you can't use the 2016 playbook. It's really that simple.

It would really help to have even average political leadership right now in the United States.

Trump had an opportunity. Almost every other leader during COVID got a massive boost. If Trump did a good job with the virus, I still wouldn't vote for him (Ukraine was my red line) but I'd at least understand that the proof was in the pudding.
