The obnoxious atheists typically care that the investments in religion would be better spent on philanthropy such as vaccinating the third world and abducting kids from "unfit" parents.

The sane atheists typically wax philanthropy is inherently evil.

The orthodox atheists shut up and go with the God matrix but quietly use his name in vain to describe their own materialistic philosophies and try to sound like Einstein.

Regardless, Proverbs 2 tells us the ways of men is right in their own eyes God weighs the spirit. I think the Atheists you describe (who are zealous), have the weight of spirit needed to be elected. The awesome thing is, that spirit of the zealous atheist is the one of the two correct temperatures to pass. Maybe reach them with thermodynamics.

My answer would be much simpler than yours. I think it's possibly because they believe that there is a God deep down, but they don't WANT it to be true so they expend all of their energy on trying to prove that there isn't one, because they KNOW that if He is real, they will have to answer to Him one day and they don't want that.
