When 2 bears maul and tear up a kid what do you think happens? They either die or get mutilated for life. In those days there was no modern surgery or an ambulance to help you out those people didn't even wash their hands as a basic medical practice lol.
It's more than safe to assume they died or even if miraculously survived they would be horribly clawed and scared for life which is an incredibly painful existence in those times.
