i'm a hobbyist model train enthusiast, and i have a dozen or so friends who work for the railroad. in seriousness i hope we get more trains, not less. both for transportation of goods and people and for leisure travel.

i just wish the one that drove by my house every night about 20 minutes after i put my daughter down to sleep didnt honk so aggressively, there's only 1 blind intersection to the tracks and it's miles away. he blares it for about 5 miles straight through our village.

So, it's more like "Fuck this train in particular"?

Have you considered not being poor? Only poor people live near trains.

the only poor people i know have landlords and call them leeches. like just get a 700 credit score and buy a house peasant!

also i live like a half mile away, is that still poor tier? :P

Don't know. Am poor myself and the trains I've lived near are annoying and super loud.

you're not far off, in the small country village i live outside of the nice houses are way away from the train, and packed near the train tracks are shitty poor people houses.

you could prob ride those tracks 40 miles before you find a $400k house, meanwhile passing hundreds of 100k$ dumps.

That's pretty on brand for this country. Run freeways and rail lines next to or through poor neighborhoods.

in the case of my area its more of a historical reason. the "town" was just a trading post station between 2 larger cities. chosen because it was about halfway and a creek ran through. so all of the properties near the railroad date to the 1850s and 1860s. but we've been unincorporated for nearly 100 years after the highway was completed and the need for a trading station was no longer there.

now we're just a 2 mile long 35MPH slowdown with a gas station, post office, grain elevator, and a single bar/restaurant. fine by me!

i did though walk through the original house of the people who the town is named after. built in 1856. gorgeous 1st level that's been updated to an open concept, narrow staircase to get upstairs that wasnt great but it was ok, same to the 3rd floor which is just one single room. for 100k at the time knowing we could get it for prob 85k i was interested. then i went in the basement. fieldstone foundation with what looked like rivers carved in the floor leading to no less than 5 sump pumps. also had a room where an oil burner was at one time, still stunk like old crude.

glad we passed but one of these days im gonna knock and ask to metal detect on the property.

This might be an oversimplification as im just reading up on this but it looks like the regulations that could have prevented this were opposed by rail lobbyist influencing a republican government under trump who repealed the requirements for better brakes on trains carrying hazardous chemicals

brakes caused it to derail?

Steven Ditmeyer, a former top official at the Federal Railroad Administration, said the "severity" of the accident was likely increased by the lack of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brakes.

Yikes on several fucking bikes. We put an offer on a house back in 2013, and the inspection found the attic infested with mold. Immediately rescinded the offer, as Mrs Surfpunk is highly allergic to mold. Thieves had also stolen the copper coil from the AC compressor outside, but that was just insult to injury.
