What is going to matter is how DeSantis and Trump's conflict plays out. If DeSantis plays it as I think he should, he'll rarely go after Trump explicitly. He'll argue for better governance, competence, etc. But Trump is going to attack him endlessly, and I don't know how his non-responsiveness will play with Trump voters. It could easily make him look weak and he'll be another Republican frontrunner flameout like Jeb Bush or Scott Walker.

If you go back to 2015, you will see that virtually every republican candidate ended up lowering themselves to roll in the mud with Trump, where he will always win. Jeb especially was pretty pathetic in this regard. If DeSantis literally never attacks Trump directly, I think it's very possible for him to dethrone the Trumpster.

So far, all of Trump’s attacks on Desantis have made Trump look like a toddler.

DeSantis' lane is clearly to be the "trumpism without Trump"-candidate. For this to succeed, the supporters of trumpism must be convinced that the founder of their movement is no longer the best suited to lead it into the future. Any time Trump makes this case for DeSantis by his stupid attacks, he's doing him a favor. DeSantis can of course not win if he's perceived as an anti-Trump candidate in the sense that he disagrees with Trump on policy or vision. Where IceMage and I disagree is whether the sheer fact of running against Trump will already be enough for a critical mass of primary voters to perceive DeSantis as "anti-Trump" or "establishment".

I would go even further: it will imho not hurt DeSantis to attack Trump on issues where Trump undeniably fucked up in the eyes of his own base. For example he could accuse Trump of being too vaccine-friendly, or that he "enabled" Fauci and his ilk to lock the country down. Or that Trump's petty focus on relitigating the 2020 election has cost the party in the midterms.

I still hope trump goes away

DeSantis 2024 would be epic.
