Because it just wasn't that big of a deal to basically anybody.

I've seen easily 100x more conservatives claiming people are mad about Twitter than I have people being mad about Twitter.

The intent on display is alarming enough, even if they had to back down this time. They thought they could sneak it in, the attempt failed. Doesn't rule out that they'll try again in the future with better preparation, potentially even ramming such a change through in spite of a public outcry. The whole tech sector suffers from a dangerously high degree of monopolization and the whole industry is infested by far-left authoritarians with a political agenda.
