What percent of the population do you think should be immigrant? In the US, the number is 15%. Canada is about 20%. Australia is about 30%. Singapore is 45%.

It's not about the percent of the population that's immigrant, it's about the degree of assimilation and about how many are coming in at once. 1 million per year doesn't sound too much in a country of 332m, but that's only the number of legal immigrants. When there's another 1.8 million illegals on top, that's a bit much. Keep in mind that 2% annual population growth are typical for third world countries and implies the population doubling every 35 years. Even 1% population growth per year (which is round about what the US is on track for currently) means a doubling of the population within 70 years. At some point, you run into limits on resources and favorable locations for settlements. Let's be honest: even if 2 billion people were crowded along the coasts, there would still be no one who wants to move to North Dakota.

I think American immigrants assimilate extraordinarily well. Unlike Europe where ethnicity and culture are inextricably linked, our culture is based off of ideas which is why anyone can come here and assimilate. The ones who come here truly drink the Kool-Aid and believe that America is number 1 and they will bust their ass to do that. They know what it's like to live in a shit hole and are deeply appreciative of what America has to offer.

The way to cure xenophobia in America is to interact with immigrants and listen to their love for America. Seeing a Chinese guy talk shit about Communism in a broken accent is one of the most American things out there and even Trump voters will give them a high five.
