How would a background check help to prevent mass shootings though? I don't think someone who is thinking of shooting up a school will tell people that.

Ideally background checks will prevent the crazy from purchasing a gun but we all know that in reality it very very rarely does this. We would just be adding more bureaucracy and making the gun-buying process more cumbersome for the regular people.

um a lot of the people in this forum and in the US believe a major component of owning weapons is to fight back against a tyrannical gov't. GTFOH
