I love how you say Democrats are moving left and then say it's a party of rich white liberals (i.e. conservatives who don't want to call themselves that).
Almost like you're just cherry picking whatever you think makes them look bad instead of looking at the real situation.
It's a complicated situation, so any generalization that I could fit into a sentence or two will fall short of the mark. But what I would say is that the intellectual core of the Democratic party is white, urban, and relatively well to do. They're socially very left, and they to look at the country through a racial lens. They've been joined by neoliberal cast-offs from the right, which has the effect of making the Democratic party more corporatist, not less. Those cast-offs are also well to do, which emphasizes the first trend. Blue collar, economic center, socially right voters traditionally voted blue. Now they're trending red because Republicans are occupying that "centrist" economic ground, and Republicans and blue collar generally agree on social issues anyway.
There are still many poor Democratic voters, but the trend is towards them being urban, and because they are underrepresented in the leadership caste, their voices aren't necessarily heard. Black Dem voters are far more conservative socially than the Democratic party is today, but they have next to no influence on national policy.
